How can SMEs find space for AI projects in the hamster wheel of everyday life?

We often discuss tools, data, and budgets - but we overlook one simple truth: before we can implement AI projects, we must first make space for them.

In small and medium-sized enterprises, financial and human resources are often limited. Daily operations set the pace, leaving little capacity for long-term innovation projects.

AI doesn’t fail because of the technology - it fails because many SMEs never put the topic firmly on the agenda. Only when management treats an “AI pilot project” as a fixed item does real momentum begin.

My three recommendations:

1️⃣ Put AI on the management agenda A formal meeting slot with a clear mandate achieves more than the best idea exchanged in the corridor. Without top-down commitment, AI remains a nice-to-have.

2️⃣ Start with small quick wins An internal customer service chatbot or automated reporting can deliver fast efficiency gains and win over sceptical team members. Early success builds acceptance.

3️⃣ Mindset before technologyA small team with curiosity and a willingness to experiment is more valuable than pure software expertise. The readiness to try new things — and learn from mistakes — determines success.

Those still hesitating should remember the early internet years: those who waited too long were left behind. AI is evolving at a far greater speed. We need a roadmap today to stay competitive tomorrow. Otherwise, the bird will never take flight.
